Mrs. Rodriguez says... Does anyone check the blog this early?

Remember that essay we studied yesterday? Yeah... It's on the test!

So is a question about how well Reconstruction secured the rights of freedmen...

Mrs. Rodriguez says... Movie TOMORROW (11/21)

http://www.moviefone.com/movie/lincoln/10084319/showtimes?selectedShowDate=2012-11-21
http://www.pccmovies.com/theater.php?rtsID=22759&req_date=11212012

Okay y'all--I THINK it is showing in College Station, but because some sites say it is and some sites (and Alona : ) say it isn't, let's just do the sure thing and go to Bryan.

I didn't get a lot of feedback on timing--so I chose around Natey's nap time : )

I'll be outside of the Bryan theater from about 11:15 tomorrow until about 11:25ish for the 11:30 AM showing of the movie Lincoln.

I'd love for you to join me (and get a fun-er version of the extra credit, I might add!)--but if you can't, I'll totally love the movie in my geeky history way anyhow ; )

Please try to share this with your APUSH friends (heck, any friends who'd like to come), in case they might not check the blog tonight or in the morning.

Happy Thanksgiving Break!

Mrs. Rodriguez says... An opportunity for extra credit

Would Lincoln be frustrated with today's Congress?

Just a few points here and there (less than 5, for sure, on an assessment grade)--but it's an interesting read.

Read, choose a quote, and comment with some analysis.

Be sure you check that your post actually posts--no responsibility on my part for technical glitches--and they do happen!  I recommend typing your post in Word and saving it in case yours is lost and you need to re-post.

This applies to ALL CLASSES (Mrs. R and Mr. Wilkerson!)

Due Monday after Thanksgiving.

ALSO--Am hoping to get a group together to see the Lincoln movie, potentially at either Noon OR 4:00 pm on Wednesday. We'd meet outside the theater and sit together--could be fun!  Mr. Wilkerson and I would willingly substitute this (given a proper write up afterwards) for your extra credit movie for the 6 weeks!

Please comment with your intentions to come/not come and which time (noon or 4 pm) you prefer!

Mrs. Rodriguez says... for 6th Period APUSHERs

The Civil War causes analysis is NOT due tomorrow!  We'll discuss it in class and it will likely be due while I'm out at the end of the week.

Thanks for being patient with my scatteredness today.

Mrs. Rodriguez says... historical elections and 2012!

In honor of election day...
Electoral Split Possible!

Compare this election to 1824, which we've already studied.

Perhaps do a bit of research to compare it to 1876 and 2000 (which we will study in the future)!

Happy Election Day!

Mrs. Rodriguez says... Post-Reconstructionist?

This is a bit premature--we won't talk about Reconstruction until just before the Winter Break... but this article was in the news TODAY and caught my attention.

I encourage you to read it and comment--I'll likely bring it up again when we get to Reconstruction!

CNN Article: Post Reconstructionist USA?

Monday, October 29, 2012

Mrs. Rodriguez says... Hint, Hint!

Big Questions to Consider:

--Was Andrew Jackson more an autocrat, or a democrat?
--How did ECONOMIC change (like the market revolution, new inventions, or early industrialization) lead to POLITICAL change?

Don't forget, when writing your essays:
1) ANSWER ALL PARTS OF THE QUESTION
2) Follow all facts with analysis
3) To count as analysis, it must link your fact to ALL PARTS OF YOUR ARGUMENT in the thesis.

For Example:
Thesis:
Despite at times exercising autocratic power, Andrew Jackson's presidency represented the peak of the celebration of the "common man" in government as his rhetoric always acknowledged the needs of so-called "average Americans."

Fact/Analysis:
Andrew Jackson chose to veto the re-authorization of the Second Bank of the US in 1832.  Despite the protests of Henry Clay, who insisted that Jackson was abusing the power of the Presidential veto in overriding Congress for purely political reasons, Jackson proclaimed that his actions were in the best interests of the common man, who would never benefit from the concentrated wealth that the Bank represented.  The fact that Jackson won the subsequent election of 1832 by a landslide re-affirms the idea that this was a time when the perceived interests of the average American would defeat even the powers of the nation's financial and political elites.

Mrs. Rodriguez says... More Detail on Nullification Crisis

Check the class webpage for a supplementary powerpoint (with more words than usual! : ) about the Nullification Crisis--including a super fun picture of John C. Calhoun!

Also, be sure that you can explain the significance of Daniel Webster (and the Webster-Hayne Debates) in relation to the Nullification Crisis.

Other key ideas? The Columbia Convention and the Force Act!

Bring question to class!

Mrs. Rodriguez says... Assignment for the Long Weekend!

No rotten tomatoes, please!

1st.  Finish your text review, please!  (Should be fairly quick, given that you have already read the chapter.)

2nd. Write ONE paragraph of the DBQ.  You may choose to follow the outline and thesis you created or to write a second paragraph for the sample essay and thesis that we did in class (posted on the document page).  Remember, I want to see:
* A Topic Sentence
* Documentary Information
* Outside Information (50%!)
* Analysis

Enjoy your extra day off!!!!

Happy Columbus Day : )

From Mrs. Rodriguez...

All -
I have now uploaded the How To: IDs presentation if you need it!  (Check the documents page, link to the right-->)

6th Period APUSH -
I've fallen ill and was told to remain home from work tomorrow.  Instead of beginning our notes, you will begin the document/colony analysis on Virginia.  The instructions should be modified a bit (you are not to do a full write up of EVERY document as it says)--ask the sub for details. Hopefully I'll be feeling much better tomorrow and will return Friday (we'll pick back up with the First Contacts lecture).

E-mail me with any questions!
