Mrs. Rodriguez says... is anyone reading this?

Okay, so, possibly I'm talking to myself.
But this was too good not to share with the only people on the planet who might care!

I am working on a project thing for a big company that does stuff with APUSH that involves a very detailed look at our textbook.

And I just found a gem.

I know, I told you it was funny, and you told me it was funny, and we all know.  But I just laughed out loud at the risk of waking a napping (2 year old) Baby Nate and had to share:

Also, it doesn't hurt that involves my beloved Henry Clay--

"Into this tense cockpit stepped the new Republican Speaker of the House, Thomas B. Reed of Maine...He spoke with a harsh nasal drawl and wielded a verbal harpoon of sarcasm.  To one congressman who quoted Henry Clay that he would 'rather be right than be president,' Reed caustically retorted that he 'would never be either.'  Opponents cringed at the crack of his quip."

lol.

Hope you're having a fabulous summer!

Also-- YOU GUYS DID AWESOME ON THE AP TEST! : )

Mrs. Rodriguez says... seriously, guys?!

Let's allow the guilty parties to remain anonymous here, but I'd like to share some quotes from a few of the letters to next year's students...

"You are not prepared...Rocking back and forth singing Hakuna Matata can't save your weak will."
Melodramatic much??

"You have to understand why things happened in that time and how and when and where and who and what.  Or you'll die."

"Remember one last thing, Mrs. Rodriguez is still a human being...No matter how much she seems like a totalitarian dictator, she is always willing to help her students succeed because she truly does care."
Gee... thanks? (Actually, I really AM honored that so many of you commented about me as willing to help.  I AM.  And I am glad that you knew that.)

"Don't let the fast-talking, fairy-like Rodriguez scare you, she will only harm your pride and your GPA, not your body."

"You have enrolled in a one-way  ticket to developing congestive heart failure and stomach ulcers.  In other words, welcome to hell.  If you were patriotic towards America before, start putting up the flag now, because you will leave this class cussing how condensed the history of this country is and wondering why the heck the colonies couldn't have just sucked it up and abandoned all notion of liberty."

"Stop expecting Bs and As and prepare yourself for the bitter, spiky pill of Ds and Cs."

"Prepare for the boiling bubbling resentment that you will feel towards any of your comrades in HUSH who dare utter an expression of frustration or belief that HUSH is hard."

"...But I will say is that you can look forward to free snacking in class.  Munch away as you are pelted with the unending New Deal legislation."

Okay... so when I started looking for memes, I found WAY more that made me laugh.

For example:

But hopefully, after the year is over, you feel like this:

Mrs. Rodriguez says... HENRY CLAY WINS!!!!

oh yeah... and Thomas Jefferson won in 2nd period (you're welcome Bethany!)

Have fun NOT STUDYING tonight!!!

Friday, May 10, 2013

Mrs. Rodriguez says... the FINAL FOUR!

Remember-- for your final four defense, you should be writing paragraphs, not just sentences.  One whole paragraph about the losers (why are they cool, but not quite cool enough) and one entire paragraph devoted to the person you think should win Most Influential Figure in American History.

2nd Period Final 4:
MLK
Henry Kissinger
Thomas Paine
Thomas Jefferson

6th Period Final 4:
MLK
Henry Clay
John Marshall
Abraham Lincoln

p.s.... please be studying for your APUSH exam...!  Only 3 study days left!!!!
Any of those charts, your 5 Steps Book, or the essay practice are EXCELLENT resources.  Or, try practice quizzes online.  The point isn't in taking quizzes, but in testing yourself to see what you do (and do not) remember.  I don't recommend reading over notes EXCEPT in areas where you find you've forgotten information and need a refresher.

Mrs. Rodriguez says... even BETTER video Reviews!

These are super fun (with John Green)!

Crash Course in US History

There are 11 videos rights now, and the most recent mentions OUR FAVORITE PERSON (Henry Clay!)--and covers through the War of 1812.

I would DEFINITELY recommend watching them as a form of review (and entertainment : ) of the early parts of American History.

Happy watching!

Mrs. Rodriguez says... video reviews?

Hi all!

Someone sent me the link to this site with free video test prep.

The APUSH section isn't complete yet (the latest lesson is on the Progressives) and, of those I watched, is a fairly dry offering (hint: just read the transcripts!).

Nevertheless, I like to share resources in case you can make use of them and I will say that, as a review, the content is pretty good!

I feel like we could do better... hmm...

Mrs. Rodriguez says... MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

I will be holding a full-length practice APUSH exam
in the Lecture Hall on
SATURDAY, APRIL 27th.

We will take a vote in class on whether to have a morning (8:00-12:30) or an afternoon session (1:00-5:30) a little closer to the date.

We'll go through the released exam from last year just as though it were the real thing--your only opportunity to experience the marathon timing before the actual test.  Afterwards, we'll go over all of the answers and I'll give a cram-style review session.

There will be cookies! :)

It is not mandatory that you attend--but unless you are physically unable to come I STRONGLY encourage everyone to participate.

Mrs. Rodriguez says... DOWNLOAD THIS APP!

AP US History Exam Prep - Powered by Brainscape
is FREE for a limited time only...

I was sent this alert this morning and downloaded the app myself to play with--I think it's GREAT.

It's essentially a huge flashcard set, divided by units--but the flashcards are of good quality and you rank each one based on how well you knew the answer.  It will then show you cards that you didn't know more often and cards that you did know less often as you learn them better.

For free--I HIGHLY recommend it!  Looks like an excellent study tool... and just think, you could study APUSH ANYWHERE you go!!! : )

Mrs. Rodriguez says... another movie?!

CNN Article: What 'Lincoln' The Movie Missed...

I'm glad to see that PBS is producing a film (airing Tuesday!) that shows the enduring efforts of the abolitionists to the cause of ending slavery.  I'm a HUGE Lincoln fan and liked how the movie showed his skill in negotiating the perils of Congress, but was disappointed that other abolitionists weren't shown (as Lincoln himself had to be convinced abolition was a good idea!)

I know you have buckets of "free time" ; ) -- but this PBS movie would be a worthwhile review of an important time period for you APUSHers!
